Treating Herpes Naturally and with Fewer Side Effects

Treating Herpes Naturally and with Fewer Side Effects

(NaturalNews) The term herpes generally refers to a sexually-transmitted, double-stranded DNA virus, called herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 2 (also known as human herpesvirus 2, or HHV2). This virus is closely related to herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1 or HHV1), which is the cause of common nonsexually-transmitted cold sores. These two viruses are among the eight members of the herpes virus family to infect humans, causing a variety of illnesses ranging from cold sores to brain infection (encephalitis) to chickenpox to various cancers.

A significant number of medical institutions place the incidence of oral herpes (HSV-1), which is commonly called cold sores, between 50 and 80 percent among the American population in the fifth decade of life. Whereas the incidence of genital herpes (HSV-2) in the US is estimated to be between 25 and 30 percent or about one in four adults. African Americans, people with multiple sexual partners, women, and those who become sexually active at a young age are all higher-risk populations for the transmission of HSV-2.

Currently, there is no cure for herpes, or treatment that can eradicate herpes virus from the body at reactivations of the virus. Non-prescription analgesics can reduce pain and fever during initial outbreaks.

There are several prescription antiviral medications for controlling herpes outbreaks, including aciclovir (Zovirax), valaciclovir (Valtrex), famciclovir (Famvir), and penciclovir. Aciclovir was the original and prototypical member of this class and generic brands are now available at a greatly reduced cost. Some prescription drugs to treat herpes can cause diarrhoea several times a day so patients are advised to take non prescribed diarrhoea tablets as required in these cases along with the medication. It has been claimed that the evidence for the effectiveness of topically applied cream for recurrent labial outbreaks is weak. Likewise oral therapy for episodes is inappropriate for most non-immunocompromised patients.

Since there is no current cure for herpes, almost all of the medications available for treating herpes has been geared towards handling outbreaks and trying to maximize the amount of time between them. There are, however, many natural herpes treatment options that have gained popularity over the past few decades. The most important thing to keep is mind is that no matter how long you've been able to go without an outbreak of sores, you are not cured from the herpes virus, although there is a cure that is being tested right now that is in its third trial phase.

A commercially available powder called Wonder Cure is commonly used for any and all skin
problems related to herpes, ringworm and many other diseases. The substance contains only
starch, calcium carbonate, dibasic calcium carbonate, sodium phosphate and calcium
hypochlorite as the active ingredient at just under 2 percent. To use the substance
properly, it is recommended that you clean and dry the areas in which you are showing sores
and make a paste out of the powder and apply it to the infected areas that you have. Leave
the paste on the infected areas for up to 24 hours.

Samento extract. This substance is available in both pill and liquid form. It is
extracted from a plant found in many rain forests around the world and is thought to be a
major immune system booster. Most herpes outbreaks happen when the immune system is at a
low point and the virus is able to cause an outbreak. In the native Peru where it was found
originally, the locals drink it as a tea that is thought to help boost overall health and
vitality.

Tea Tree Oil: This substance has been hailed as a veritable cure-all when it comes to any
ailment that involves open sores. Most tea tree oil is concentrated and distilled for
maximum potency, so only a small amount is needed for the effects to take place. It is
commonly used to treat canker sores, sore throats (take a small glass of water and add a few drops of the oil in it and then gargle) and with healing herpes sores outbreaks. Simply
use the eye-dropper that comes with the bottle and use a single drop of the oil on the
infected area.

A combination of healing essential oils used directly on the sores is thought to help speed healing during herpes outbreaks. Things like peppermint oil in combination with lavender combined with a small bit of olive oil can be applied directly to the sores. This is an all-natural way to help speed healing in infected areas.

Lemon balm has provided relief for some when applied as a topical ointment. A 1993 study involving 115 people afflicted by fever blisters or genital ulcers applied a cream containing lemon balm extract to their affected areas, five times a day.

Eight days later, the subjects were examined and it was determined that healing of the infected lesions took place in 96 percent of the group. It is believed that the presence of caffeic, rosmarinic, and ferulic acids present in lemon balm lends the herb its antiviral
properties.

In a separate study from the same year, the antiviral efficacy of lemon balm extract was
evaluated and its action found to be detectable within a few hours of application, ranging
from three to 24 hours, depending on the strength of the extract used. Without treatment,
recovery from an outbreak typically takes from one to two weeks.

Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra), given as glycyrrhizic acid, has also shown therapeutic
benefit in the treatment of herpes. High levels of glycyrrhizic acid have actually affected
irreversible deactivation of the herpes simplex virus in vitro. It should be noted,
however, that prolonged use of licorice may result in the retention of sodium and a loss of
potassium. Therefore, anyone being treated for high blood pressure should seek professional
advice and care.

Other herbs to consider, according to the book Managing Herpes published by the American
Social Health Association (ASHA), are goldenseal, taken in capsules or teas, which has
antiviral properties, and garlic - an ancient folk remedy for colds that has been shown to
inhibit a number of viruses, including herpes, and bacteria in vitro. In addition, the book
states, "practitioners of homeopathic medicine, naturopathic medicine, and Chinese herbal
medicine also have treatments for people with herpes." The book also notes that a healthy
lifestyle is important in the management of herpes. They remind us to: eat a balanced diet,
get the proper amount of sleep and exercise, avoid excesses of caffeine and alcohol, stay
away from tobacco, and be careful to manage chronic stress.

The natural treatments described above are effective, safe, and without the unpleasant side
effects often experienced with synthetic medications. The standard allopathic treatment for
herpes simplex is, most often, topical applications of the drug, acyclovir (Zovirax), but
the rate of healing is often the same, or even less accelerated, than is experienced with
the herbal therapies discussed above.

If one maintains balance and peace in mind and body herpes will become a relative non-factor in their life. For diet, avoiding caffeine in all forms including chocolate, coffee, green tea and black tea. Avoiding nicotine and excessive alcohol consumption and all nuts and seeds except for hemp seeds and flax seeds. Eating a low-sugar diet with only moderate amounts of whole grain bread and whole grain pasta are also recommended. However one should reach for the foods rich in omega fatty acids such as hemp and flax seeds, salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel, avocados and olives. Also eating organic
yoghurt daily with at least 2.5% milk fat as well as eating lots of garlic or taking a garlic supplement are good ways to maintain overall health.

Taking up a healthy hobby like yoga or tai-chi or qi-gong, playing some tennis, racquetball or squash should help. However, avoid L-lysine. Long-term use of L-lysine can actually impair the immune system. Get your lysine from your diet rather than a pill. Foods rich in lysine: chicken, beef, yeast, milk, eggs, beans, cheese.

Tell Me About Herpes Simplex 2

Tell Me About Herpes Simplex 2 by Chas Oliver

Herpes Simplex 2 is shorthand for Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2, or HSV 2. There are two strains of the Herpes Simplex Virus: HSV 2, and Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1, or HSV 1. When a Herpes Simplex 2 infection presents obvious symptoms, which it usually does not, the symptoms are most likely to be an outbreak of blisters in the genital area. Because Herpes Simplex 2 typically presents symptoms in the genital area, Herpes Simplex 2 infection is often referred to as genital herpes.

It's thought that twenty percent of adults in the U.S. have Herpes Simplex 2 infection, though some estimates put the infection rate at twenty-five percent of U.S. adults. Whatever the actual number, Herpes Simplex 2 infection is becoming increasingly common. One likely reason for the increase in Herpes Simplex 2 transmission is status ignorance: an overwhelming majority of Herpes Simplex 2 infected people -- eighty percent or more -- don't know they're infected. This sheds light on one of the myths of genital herpes: that it is a highly symptomatic condition, with gruesome outbreaks. The dramatic images of genital herpes outbreaks that one may come across are actually the exception, not the rule.

It used to be thought that Herpes Simplex 2 infection could only be transmitted during an obvious outbreak, but research has demonstrated that the Herpes Simplex 2 virus can be present on the body surface even when the classic symptoms of an outbreak aren't occurring, and when the virus is present it is transmittable. This appearance of Herpes Simplex 2 virus in the absence of identifiable outbreak symptoms is referred to as viral shedding. Some herpes researchers question whether viral shedding isn't actually just an outbreak, minus some of the more classic outbreak symptoms. In any event, the consensus is that Herpes Simplex 2 is transmittable at potentially any time, because of viral shedding.

Some would attribute the increasing rates of Herpes Simplex 2 infection to transmission during viral shedding, but this is questionable. There is considerable ignorance about how the symptoms of Herpes Simplex 2 typically present themselves, and the uninformed often associate genital herpes infection with obvious blistering outbreaks. So the slight discomfort or itch or unusual appearance in the genital area is not genital herpes but jock itch, or an ingrown hair, or shaving irritation. Additionally, people typically presume -- incorrectly -- that genital herpes symptoms always appear within a few days after infection. As stated previously, the large majority of people with Herpes Simplex 2 infection don't recognize symptoms at all; and it's possible for someone to recognize genital herpes literally years after they were infected with it. This ignorance about actual Herpes Simplex 2 symptoms and infection time line may be the most significant factor in increasing transmission rates, not viral shedding.

How Can You Tell Someone Has Genital Herpes?

How Can You Tell Someone Has Genital Herpes?
 by: Nathalie Foy

How can you tell someone has genital herpes? Do you take a good look at the person? Do you ask and look straight in their eyes? Do you inquire about their sex lives? Well, my answer is no, maybe and maybe.
It may be a good idea to ask someone if they’re aware of having genital herpes. The more sexual partners a person has had in their lives, the more likely they’re to be infected by herpes. But these methods are quite insufficient. Did you know that the majority of people who have genital or oral herpes are not aware of it? So how do you explain that? Simple, many oral or genital herpes infected people just don’t have any herpes symptoms, others have some symptoms which are mild enough to confuse them with a rash or a mosquito bite or anything that may cause, redness, swelling, itching, burning and blisters, and some may not even know what herpes symptoms are.
The fact that somebody doesn’t have or recognize herpes symptoms doesn’t mean they don’t have it. About 25% of the US population is infected with genital herpes, with women being more affected than men. Studies have shown that the vast majority (80%-90%) of people who have genital herpes have not been diagnosed with the condition.
According to a recent paper published by Carnegie Mellon University in January 2006, most sexually active teenage girls know almost nothing about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), except AIDS, until it is too late. Another 2006 study led by Dr. Herbert Kaufman, Boyd Professor of Ophthalmology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, found herpes virus-1 in 98 percent of healthy participants. None of them displayed any symptoms; however they shed the herpes virus in their saliva and tears at least once during the course of the 30-day study. Even though this study didn’t target genital herpes directly, it demonstrates that most people can be totally unaware of carrying the virus and being infected by herpes.
Shed or shedding means that the virus is present on the skin and ready to be transmitted. Herpes is transmitted through skin contact 98% of the time. Studies have shown that shedding may occur in almost 40% of HSV-2 (usually associated with genital herpes) infected people. Asymptomatic viral shedding may last 1 to 5 days, meaning that a person can be contagious without presenting any symptoms at the time. The average duration of each period of viral shedding has been assessed through laboratory studies but is just an estimate.
So how can you tell for a fact if someone has genital herpes? The only way to know is to look at blood, PCR or swab test results. Swab and PCR tests are very accurate when they detect herpes. However, if a test was performed late or delivered to the lab late, it may return a false negative result. Western blot test, a blood test, is the most accurate test available but may return a false negative if the person tested was first infected within the past 3 months. So it is not easy to know if a person has genital herpes or not.
One last consideration, herpes Simplex 1 or HSV-1 usually causes oral herpes and cold sores and herpes simplex-2, genital herpes. But herpes virus-1 genital herpes is becoming more and more prevalent nowadays. It is mostly transmitted during oral sex from a person who’s having an oral herpes infection with or without symptoms. So if getting genital herpes is a concern to you, you should consider oral herpes as well as genital herpes when asking a partner.
As you can see, it is very difficult to assess if a partner has genital herpes. There are no proven products to prevent genital herpes transmission at the moment. Some are currently undergoing testing for FDA approval and will hopefully be marketed soon. In the meanwhile, the best option is using a condom.

Solving Herpes

Solving Herpes

Published By: Phil Bate
Solving Herpes
Herpes is a viral disease that "hides" mostly in fatty tissue that surrounds nerve cells and pathways. There are three classified types of herpes, although the first two below are the same virus found in different places.
Herpes Simplex 1: This is the most common, and it usually occurs on or around the lips, but it can occur anywhere on the body. It is often transmitted to other persons via kissing.
Herpes Simplex 2: This is actually the same virus as #1 above, but is found generally on the genital regions, and is usually transmitted by sexual contact.
Herpes Zoster: Also known as "Shingles", this can be the most painful of all. It is thought to be a "left-over" from chicken pox that lies dormant (or can) for many years and suddenly appears.
All of these forms are generated to a large extent by stress as a major factor. However, there are several other factors involved. It's important to understand these to prevent outbreaks.
The first two forms of Herpes Simplex require a certain balance of two amino acids to reproduce. These are Argenine and Lysine. If, and when, the Argenine level gets high, and the Lysine level gets low, Herpes comes out to play (reproduce).
That's when you first notice an itch that becomes a small reddened area with one or more very small pimples. Don't kiss anyone or have sex without a condom (depending on the area of the Herpes outbreak) during this time. Herpes is spread by contact, and is very infectious.
There is no cure for herpoid viruses to date. Herpes is estimated to affect 80 million people in America, and about 20% of the US population has genital Herpes So, while we cannot cure it, we do have some control of outbreaks. If we keep the level of Lysine high, the conditions for reproduction are limited. (Another benefit of high Lysine levels is that it seems to help keep the heart healthy). It should be noted that this is not always that simple. Our diet is important. Sugar, chocolate, and nuts are high in Argenine, and many athletes use Argenine as strength building. Herpes is known as the Holiday disease, particularly at Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.
I've had genital Herpes for 60 years, and have never infected another person to my knowledge. I found out what I'm writing here, and have been careful about sex without a condom whenever I "itch".
In later years, I've found that I require more Lysine than I did 40 years ago, when I discovered the Lysine/Argenine balance. I now take 1 pill (1000 mg) of Lysine per day, and still very occasionally get an outbreak.
Dealing with an outbreak
In spite of "best intentions", we humans fail. We overeat those foods that are high in Argenine, and we have stress almost constantly, so we will get outbreaks. There are different remedies available, some prescription, and some over-the-counter (OTC).
First take care of the affected skin area. Keep the area dry and clean during outbreaks to help healing. Avoid physical contact with the area from the time of first noticing symptoms (typically tingling, itching, burning) until all sores are completely healed, not just scabbed-over. Until that time, you and your "discards" are highly infectious. The scabs and any other residue that is on your clothes is dangerous, and it's possible to re-infect yourself and others.
Next, treat the outbreak carefully. Valtrex and similar ointments do help to dry up the infection quickly, but I found a simpler and cheaper way years ago. I simply wet an edge of a bar of ordinary soap, (or a drop of liquid soap) and rub it all over and around the affected area, coating it with a layer of soap. I also scratch the area, and break the small pimples before and while doing this. I wash my hands thoroughly after doing this, then let the soapy area dry before putting on clothes. Within a week or so, the tiny scabs are gone and the skin is "normal".
There are some that will disagree with this, but it's been very effective for me, and many others I've advised. It's cheap and avoids doctors and drugs. Some further advice - Latex condoms reduce your risk of spreading or getting herpes. Wash your hands with soap and water if you touch a sore.
If you understand and follow these simple instructions, then Herpes Simplex isn't that much of a problem.

Can STD Dating Sites Work?

Can STD Dating Sites Work?

Published By: Tamara Jones
One of the hardest issues I have been through is having a loved one that received an std disease. My best friend contracted it while she was involved with a man that slept around a lot. She was the most loyal girl I've known. However, she never expected her ex-boyfriend to cheat. Not only did he cheat, but she got an STD from him. This had to be the just about the most painful experiences I've seen someone go through.
After contracting the disease, she went through a period of depression. Then she soon got over it and got enough courage to begin going out on dates again. She got back into the dating scene and because my best friend was such a wonderful and honest person, she would let guys know beforehand that she had an std. Well, one by one I would see guys just not call her again.
I felt so bad for her and I also felt anger. I knew how wonderful this girl was and I was witnessing men turn her down because of something her ex-boyfriend did to her. I consoled her and told her the perfect guy would come along.
After experiencing this disease's effect, I did some research on it and found that 20% of American adults have some type of STD and herpes is on top of the list. I did more research and saw that there tons of people going through the same emotional roller coaster as my best friend. Then I ran across std dating sites. I was surprised to know there was a community like this with normal folks that were getting same problem and contracted an STD and they were all looking for love. These were people in all shapes, colors and sizes. I told my girlfriend and she reluctantly decided to join one. Now I am so happy that she did because she's now engaged to a guy she met on the website!
However, it's not only about finding a "new loved". There's also resources available that keep informed with STDs. There are help groups and more that I can see how so many enjoy these communities.
If you would like to join safe and private STD dating sites, I recommend a great one at http://std-dating.info. Don't let this disease stop you from living your life. STD dating sites can be fun and safe.

Genital Herpes - Various Facts

Genital Herpes - Various Facts

Published By: Aderline Jane
A number of men and women suffer from genital herpes. Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted virus. It's important to know some of the facts associated with the disease in order to help treat it better.
Genital herpes
Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus. The areas of the body that are affected by the virus include, but are not limited to, the cervix, genitals, and the skin. This is a chronic condition. Some people who carry the virus don't display the symptoms of the virus. The periods of remission associated with this virus increase over time. Also, the severity of the symptoms tends to see a decrease with time.
Various facts about genital herpes:
Fact 1: It's a common sexually transmitted disease (STD)

This is not a rare sexually transmitted disease. Research shows that a large percentage of people are infected with this virus. The transmission of the virus occurs through sexual intercourse wherein the virus passes from one person to the other through the skin, vagina, penis or the anus.
Fact 2: You might be unaware that you are suffering from genital herpes

An interesting fact of this disease is that a number of people who are suffering from genital herpes don't show the symptoms associated with the disease. Another problem is that many of them have no idea about the common symptoms of genital herpes. It's estimated that only a third of the people suffering from the condition exhibit its symptoms. These symptoms include genital pain and discharge, fever, headache, and blisters.
Fact 3: It's your partner for life

If you are affected by genital herpes, it remains for life. This is because the virus passes from the skin or membranes of the genital region onto the central nervous system. At various times the virus will reactivate itself and cause a recurrence of the disease. During reactivation the virus travels from the nerves to the skin and causes burning, inflammation, tingling and tenderness. Most of the times, a person shows no symptoms with the recurrence of the condition.
Fact 4: Blisters are not needed for the transmission of the virus

Even without the symptomatic blisters, genital herpes can be passed onto you. The virus remains active on various areas of the body especially the genitals. If you have a history of genital herpes, it is important to use a condom during sexual intercourse.
Fact 5: Oral sex can help pass on genital herpes to your partner

The type I herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) causes cold sores or/and fever blisters. These can go on and cause genital herpes. If you don't want to pass this virus onto you partner, it would be a good idea not to indulge in oral sex, especially if you have cold sores or fever blisters.
Fact 6: Pregnant women, who are transmitted genital herpes during late pregnancy, can pass on this virus to their babies

Pregnant women who are on the last third stage of their pregnancy and contract genital herpes can pass the virus onto their babies. Such babies suffer from a serious condition called neonatal herpes. An infection like this becomes less likely if the mother has contracted this condition before the late stage of the pregnancy. Women who are likely to pass on the virus to their babies are given Cesarean section at the time of delivery. This is done in order to minimize the risk on the baby suffering from neonatal herpes.
Fact 7: The virus does not destroy your life

Don't go in a prolonged state of shock if you have been diagnosed with genital herpes. It is definitely a serious condition but not something that will destroy your life. A good medical provider will address all your concerns regarding the disease and make sure that your life is not majorly affected in any way or form. Don't be ashamed of the disease as it's a condition that can be managed very well with the use of drugs.
If you think you are suffering from genital herpes, it's important to seek immediate medical help. Get as much information as you can about the disease in order to know more about it. The more knowledge you will have about the disease, the more comfortable you will be about facing it and living with it.
